Signs of Spring

Hamamelis x intermedia 'Jelena'
Daffodils

After what seems like a very long winter, we've had two days of above freezing temperature. Suddenly, spring does not seem so far away. The daffodils are pushing out of the ground and witch hazel trees are blooming all over the city, unfurling their curly ribbons in shades of gold and copper.

St Valentine

Mary and Robert Frank photographed by Elliot Erwitt
Valencia, Spain 1952

This is the most romantic photograph I know.

"Il fallait bien qu'un visage
Réponde à tous les noms du monde"

Paul Éluard, "XXIX", L'Amour, La Poésie

These are two of the most romantic lines I know, from a collection of poems that Paul Éluard wrote to his wife, Gala, who later left him for Dali.

About Alice
Calvin Trillin's celebration of his wife Alice, which he wrote after she died of cancer in 2001, is the most beautiful testament of love I've ever read.

Happy New Year
